Health and WELL BEING

Everything worthwhile takes time, nurturing, and love. When something isn’t working, love it more, nurture it more and give it more time. -Bryant McGill

9 STEPS TO nurture

At the heart of nurture is a focus on wellbeing and relationships and a drive to support the growth and development of children and young people.’ Education Scotland (2017)

Our nursery embarked on our Nine steps to Nurture journey since 2022. Throughout the process of our journey, Elmcroft strived to embed the six principles of nurture seamlessly into our interactions, experiences and spaces. The six principles of nurture are;

∙ All behaviour is communication

∙ Language is understood as a vital means of communication

∙ The environment is a safe space

∙ Children’s learning is understood developmentally

∙ Nurture is important for the development of self-esteem

∙ Transitions are significant in the lives of children

On 25th July 2024, Elmcroft nursery was inspected and awarded the nurture accreditation. The feedback from the nurture team, staff and parents/carers was wonderful.

The inspectors said;

‘It feels like there’s a heart beat in the walls.’ – Marion Mckenzie (2024)

‘The leadership is there; however, it almost feels invisible.’ – Alisa Darling (2024)

Staff Said;

“We don’t just nurture our children and families, we nurture each other like a family”

“Our management team are very nurturing and carry out health and wellbeing check in with us all throughout the year”

Parents/carers said;

‘The nursery goes above and beyond’ and ‘We wish it was bigger’

Language and COMMUNICATION FRIENDLY

Language and Communication Friendly Establishment

The ability to communicate is an essential life skill for all children and young people.

We undertook a process of self-evaluation and worked in collaboration with Health and Social Care Partnership colleagues, Educational Psychologists and Speech and Language therapists to develop our environment and build our skills, knowledge and capacity in our team.

There are five key indicators which form the basis of our supportive practice:

Indicator One: A physical environment that enhances and promotes opportunities for speech, language and communication for all children.
Indicator Two: Adult talk that encourages and promotes participation from all learners.
Indicator Three: Adult interaction styles that are responsive to individual children’s needs.
Indicator Four: The use of supportive learning strategies to develop language and communication skills.
Indicator Five: The establishment can demonstrate a strong commitment to staff training and development to meet the speech, language and communication needs of all children.

If you would like any further information on supporting your child's language and communication skills, please speak to a member of staff who will be happy to share resources and supportive strategies.

As a result, in June 2021, we were delighted to receive our Language and Communication Friendly Accreditation.

The Adventures of Sid & Shanarri in Elmcroft Nursery

Sid & Shanarri is a high quality interactive and open ended resource, that we use to promote GIRFEC’s well being indicators for our children, families and practitioners.

Our aim is to provide our children with the tools to understand and regulate their emotions to improve the outcomes of learners.

The resource takes us on a journey through the well being wood where the characters help us understand the true meaning of the well being indicators.
